ARCTIC ANTICS
November and December are the two busiest months
of the year at the North Pole. Santa and his helpers are obviously frantic
at that time but what goes on between the holiday seasons?
The truth is that for the rest of the
year, the "off season" Santa himself, is pretty useless around the
house and workshop. Alas, Santa is strictly an ideas man and unfortunately,
is usually driving people crazy with his latest promotional concept.
Sorry, I know this is hard to take but
it is really Elfred that runs 'Arctic Enterprises'. In fact Elfred
is the guy who actually makes most of the toys and gift items as well as
gift wrapping, timetabling delivery and you name it. But notice how he
has never got a mention.
Jesse is Elfred's assistant but
Elfred wishes he wasn't. All the presents that people take back to the
department store are Jesse's work. This is an invariable rule. However,
Elfred can't fire Jesse because where is he a going to get a replacement
in the Arctic?
Arky is technically on the staff
but she loves the outdoors and mainly just pops into the work shop to give
advice and art direction. Arky's keen sense of style is detectable in all
the expensive looking presents.
Pengleton runs all the domestic
side of things and as Butler, Cook and Housekeeper he is indispensable
to the smooth running of Arctic Enterprises.
Snowmo is employed by Arctic Enterprises
as Despatch Manager and unofficial outdoors-recreational officer, during
the 'off season'. Snowmo is a creature of the outdoors as well. It's Snowmo
that lures the household out into the sunshine and fresh air and exercise.
The egg and spoon races, the snowball record attempts, the picnics, the
fishing trips, the al fresco lunches - that's all Snowmo's handy work.
He calls them "our arctic antics" as in "How about an arctic antic, today?".
Randy, the trainee reindeer cannot
sleep in the stables with the other reindeer for fear of being "rolled
upon and crushed." So Randy has become an integral part of household life
albeit a continual threat to the smooth running of Arctic Enterprises.
Randy is always keen for any of Snowmo's outdoor group activities.
Pokey is Santa's, spoilt rotten
dog. But Pokey doesn't like all the attention. He generally likes to find
a place to hide. A place from which he can watch the world and yet remain
unobserved. Everybody can see where Pokey has hidden, of course. It's a
devil of a time, convincing Pokey to come out for his dinner. But Pokey
would never miss one of Snowmo's arctic antics.
