PETER LALOR: Gold miner, rebel. The high cost of a gold mining licence and lack of voting rights has galvanised the disgruntled Ballarat miners into mass protest. Peter, a charismatic, motor mouth, steps out to lead his fellow miners in open rebellion. 150 of them build the Eureka stockade and prepare to repel the government troops. CAPTAIN THOMAS: Ballarat Rifles. The Victorian government send troops under Captain Thomas who albeit unwillingly is determined to attack and destroy the stockade. CAROLINE CHISHOLM: Philanthropist, social pioneer, orator par excellence. After setting up schools and orphanages in Sydney, Caroline visits the Gold Fields and finally shames the Government into abandoning the prohibitive licence fees and improving the living conditions of the gold miners.
